Can soybeans help preserve our roads?

Move over olives and coconuts… there’s a new oil in town.

You probably made last night’s dinner with your favorite cooking oil. But when was the last time you used oil outside of the kitchen? And no, we’re not talking motor oil here. In a recent finding, Michigan farmers have discovered that soybean oil is an outstanding preserver of roads’ primary component — asphalt.

A company called Biorester has begun utilizing soybean oil-based asphalt in parts of Michigan pavement preservation projects. According to the company’s research, their soybean oil-based asphalt has the ability to increase a road’s potential lifecycle by up to 40%. Ultimately, the product is decreasing the brittleness, improving the flexibility of the pavement, and decreasing cracking in roads.
